After Huge Setback, Updating My Hair Routine with Shea Moisture Make It Last Wash N' Go Curl Primer

If you have been following me for a while, you know that I've been on a healthy hair care journey.  I have been wearing my hair short for my entire adult life and wanted to change things up a bit by sporting a longer, fuller, curly hairdo.  I wrote about my hair care regimen at the beginning of this year, make sure to check that out.

I Have Bad News About My Hair

Well, sadly, with this update, my hair wasn't thriving at all, and it's all my fault for not properly taking care of it, plus myself.

Recently, I was noticing my hair felt very dry and brittle; also, a lot of breakages was happening when I used the denman brush to comb out my tangles for my wash and go's.  I was manipulating my hair too much, not giving it a break.  My hair at the ends was breaking off badly, and I needed to get professional help to revert the damage I have caused.

Yearly, I visit my hair stylist at JCPenney to get a trim and check to make sure my hair is prospering.

During my visit, my stylist was very concerned with the condition of my hair and immediately could tell that I don't drink enough water, and my PH balance may be off.  Plus, the hair products I use, the hair gels, were making my hair worst.

I know using hair gels are very bad, especially the ones with alcohol in it, but I love the curly defined look.  There are times when I use only hair wrap lotion or creams, but with this Atlanta heat, it makes my hair look and feels like a brillo pad by the end of the day.

Once my stylish wash, deep condition, and blew my hair out, she showed me not only my damaged ends, but I also was suffering from thinning hair on top of my head.  NO!!!!

After this discovery, the first thing that crosses my mind was I got to do better, or I'll end up with no hair at all.

Another bad news my hair stylist had to tell me was I had to cut my hair back to chin/neck length!  NO!  My hair had grown down my back since the last trim in late 2018.

I hate setbacks, but it's just a way to gear up for a comeback.  I got to start taking better care of my insides, as well as out.

It's Time to Make a Change to Better My Hair and Myself

Now, with the change, my hair care routine will have to be different.  First, I got to start drinking more water and eating much better.  Already, I have returned to the gym several times a week.  Secondly, no more gels and styling my hair so much.  I'm thinking I may return to twist-outs during the fall and winter months.

With my wash and go's I found an alternative from gels, Shea Moisture's Coconut Custard Make It Last Wash N' Go Curl Primer.

The Shea Moisture Curl Primer helps make a wash and go's last longer, so it'll help me not have to rewash and style my hair each day, just fluff out and go as the day passes.

Now, you may be thinking, doesn't this curl primer have gel in it?

Yes, it does; however, it has super-conditioning coconut oil milk, and kokum butter blend with plant peptides giving my hair moisture and softness it needs, not that stiff, dry feel like regular gels.  And still, I achieve the curl definition I love.

  • Coconut- Rich in Vitamin E, conditioning fatty acids, and natural triglycerides
  • Kokum Butter- Rich in essential fatty acids, it helps support hair's elasticity.
  • Plant Peptides- The building blocks of protein, it helps coat hair strands to enhance curl definition.

  1. So sorry you had to get a cut. I've been putting off getting a trim myself as I'm sure I'm going to have to get some cut as well. My issue is ditching the protective styles and straightening my hair every two weeks. I'll have to check out the Shea Moisture line to see if they have something that can help me get my hair back under control.

Good luck with your hair journey.

Also, I'd love to learn more about your fitness routine. I have been working out at home hard for these past couple of months and always looking to incorporate different exercises.

    1. Only fault about the damage of my hair is my own. I knew all that hard brushing and gels is damaging my hair. Well, lesson learned, and back rocking a super short hair cut...again.

I go to the gym two times a week. I power walk on the treadmill for 20 minutes, do fifty crunches on a machine, lift weights, and 35 minutes on a bike. I need to be doing a lot more in my gym routine. Once the weather starts getting cooler, I'm going to start my walks in the park again along with going to the gym.

  2. Aw, that stink Lou. Sorry that that happened to you. But I have to say, your hair looks beautiful short as well as long. Curly or straight!

    1. Thanks Sis! It's a bummer, but now I know how to slow and/or eliminate the hair loss.
