The Top Songs Played at Black Family Reunions

The Top Songs Played at Black Family Reunions

Each year during the summer months, my family and I attend a couple of my family's reunions.  We always have a blast catching up with family members and also meeting new ones.

Best part about attending my southern family reunions is the food!  Oh my goodness the food be screamin'!  Makes you want to slap ya momma, it's so good!  (Don't go slapping your mom, 😅)

Also, what I like is that my family hires a DJ to play all the classic hits to get everyone up- including the old folks, movin' and groovin'.

I wanted to share some of The Top Songs Played at Black Family Reunions, check out the list below:

Summer Time By The Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff

Cupid Shuffle by Cupid

Cha-Cha Slide by Mr. C

Step in the Name of Love by R. Kelly

I'll Take You There by The Staple Singers

Humpty Dance by Digital Underground

Flashlight by George Clinton

Get Down On It by Kool & The Gang

Me and Mrs. Jones by Billy Paul

Did I get you guys out of your seat dancing yet?

My dad also likes to have Blues music playing since that's pretty much all he listens to in Memphis, but I think the Blues can be a bit slow and depressing because the storyline of Blues songs is usually about sadness.  I want to have a good time, not listening to someone singing about being down on their luck.

UPDATE- How in the world can I forget about The O'Jays Family Reunion?  That is one of the biggest songs at black family reunions.  How embarrassing!

Family Reunion by The O'Jays

Another song I forgotten (thanks Brandy) We Are Family by Sister Sledge.

We Are Family by Sister Sledge

Ashley over at FabEllis.com made some great song suggestions.  No family reunion can go without playing some Michael Jackson!

PYT (Pretty Young Thing) by Michael Jackson

Remember The Time by Michael Jackson

Don't Stop Til You Get Enough by Michael Jackson

A reader suggested Bustin' Loose by Chuck Brown

Got to Give it Up by Marvin Gaye

Outstanding by Gap Band

Before I Let Go by Maze Ft. Frankie Beverly

And sorry, not the Beyonce version.  Nothing beats the original!

Are there any other songs that are always played at Black Family Reunions?

  1. Well, I can't speak to songs at Black Family Reunions because I've never been to any BUT.... I can say that it is awesome to see families come together for reunions. My family and my husbands family... sucks.. sorry but they do... I wish we had reunions.. we did growing up when I was a little kid and they were memory makers.

  14. Man! It has been so long since I've been to a family reunion. I feel like my generation needs to do a better job of large family gatherings. It was something to always look forward to when I was younger! This list brings back some great memories. Can't forget Fantastic Voyage by Lakeside. Would make a great addition to the list!
