How to Save Money Buying or Fixing Appliances

How to Save Money Buying or Fixing Appliances

At some point, you will need to replace your washing machine or make repairs to a refrigerator or stove. While it's important that you buy quality replacement products or use original parts to make repairs, you don’t have to break the bank to do so. Let’s take a look at how you can save money, buying, or fixing your household appliances.

Look for Refurbished Products

A refurbished product has a minor scratch or was returned by a customer because it didn’t fit in that person’s kitchen. Typically, companies are not allowed to market slightly defective or returned items as new products. Therefore, retailers cannot sell these items at full price, which means that you get a quality product at a significant discount.

Buy Appliances at Yard Sales or Through Social Media Marketplaces

Homeowners looking to get rid of clutter in their homes may sell their used refrigerators or stoves at yard sales at a reduced price. Individuals may also post advertisements online to sell unwanted items as quickly as possible. Those who post products for sale online will offer to deliver them to your home in some cases.

Do the Work Yourself

In most cases, appliance repair work is less expensive when you do it yourself. The same is generally true when fixing any other appliances that aren’t working as they should. You save money doing repair work on your own because you don’t have to pay labor costs that could easily reach $100 or more per hour. Furthermore, there is no need to pay the service fee that most companies charge simply for sending someone out to your home.

Buy Parts Online

Buying parts online directly from the manufacturer is often less expensive than buying them at a local hardware or home improvement store. It may also be possible to purchase parts from online discount retailers. Generally speaking, you should receive an online order within a day or two, which means that you won’t be without your dishwasher or microwave for too long.

Hire an Appliance Technician

Sometimes, an appliance may be broken enough that your instinct will be to replace it with a new product. However, you shouldn’t give up on repairs just because you cannot personally fix it yourself. Look into washer and dryer repair near you to see what quality repairs will cost. You could get an old appliance in almost new condition by talking to the right people, which will save you a lot of time, energy, and money.

Generally speaking, you don’t have to spend top dollar to get a quality product or to fix a broken appliance properly. Ideally, you won’t spend any more than what you can afford to pay when you buy your new dishwasher or have your dryer repaired. This can help you stay out of debt and give you more flexibility to pay for future home improvement projects.

  1. These are some great tips! We aren't looking forward to replacing the appliances in our rental property, but we know the time is nearing. However, we definitely feel reassured knowing we can purchase a refurbished refrigerator rather than buy a brand new one. Any recommendations on the best companies to go to for refurbished appliances?

    1. Thanks girl! You can go to places like Best Buy and purchase the floor models for cheaper price, or local appliance stores for refurbish refrigerator.
