Just in time for Valentine's Day, the Ailey company returns to share the love with Atlanta audiences at the Fox Theatre. Discover dance that reveals our deepest humanity and our capacity for beauty when the Ailey company returns for one week only (Feb 14-18) to the fabulous Fox Theatre.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater inspires in all a universal celebration of the human spirit using the African-American cultural experience and the American modern dance tradition. Nearly 60 years after its founding, Ailey continues to move forward under the leadership of Artistic Director Robert Battle, demonstrating why Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is one of the world’s most beloved dance companies.

Tony Award winner Twyla Tharp’s exuberant ballet The Golden Section is full of breathtaking leaps and finely-honed partnering. Set to a new wave rock score by David Byrne, it offers “dancing of astonishing beauty and power” (The New Yorker). Dance Magazine called this new production the "Best Revival of 2017. A dense and fun and funny concoction with split-second timing; nothing breaks these dancers' stride."

Alvin Ailey choreographed his signature solo Cry in 1971 as a gift for his dignified mother, Lula Cooper, and created the dance on his stunning muse, Judith Jamison. Mr. Ailey dedicated the ballet “to all black women everywhere--especially our mothers." In this three-part solo the dancer, clad in a white leotard and long ruffled skirt, brings the audience on a journey from bitter sorrow, through brutal hardship, to ecstatic joy. The New York Times called it “probably the closest dance has ever come to a shout - or cry - of pure anger, pain and exultation.”

The uplifting finale will be Alvin Ailey’s must-see masterpiece Revelations, which were seen by more audiences around the world than any other modern work. Since its creation in 1960, Revelations has inspired generations through its powerful storytelling and soul-stirring spirituals. Springing from Ailey’s childhood memories of growing up in the south and attending services at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Texas, Revelations pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of the African-American and explores the emotional spectrum of the human condition.

Here’s a great video of Artistic Director Robert Battle talking about why people should see Ailey now.

Saturday's matinee (Feb 17 at 2 pm) is the Family Matinee, which I hope will encourage parents to share the joy of dance with their children. This is a great way to introduce young people to Ailey and teach them about the Company’s important role in American culture.

The performance will be immediately followed by a FREE Q&A session with some of the dancers, giving audiences of all ages a chance to learn more about the life of a dancer and what it takes to become a member of Ailey.

To make the show more accessible, there is a special offer for all seats at the matinee: buy one regular price ticket, get a second at 50% off.

And guess what!  I'm giving away two tickets to one lucky reader to see the matinee show on Saturday, Feb 17th!  Giveaway Ends Feb 10th.

I'll be in attendance with my girls and we can't wait to see this show for the first time!
