Your skin’s health can be affected by a variety of factors from dry weather to your diet. Even the skincare products that you use can make your skin dry and flaky. To keep your skin healthy and properly hydrated, take some of these tips into consideration. Extra hydration practices should be followed in the fall and winter months. 

Olive Oil and Honey


There are antioxidants and healthy fatty acids in olive oil that can benefit your skin. Olive oil can be massaged into your skin without making it too oily. It is ideal to apply it before showering as it helps prevent soap and hard water from drying out or damaging your skin. Replace olive oil for other cooking oils, except for when deep-frying is required, to help hydrate your skin from the inside too.

Honey is good for its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. It helps fight infection and soothes mild irritations such as a minor sunburn. Apply honey only to the parts of your body that have the driest skin. Let the honey sit on your skin for five minutes and remove with lukewarm water. Daily use for a few days at a time should improve your skin. 

Drink More Water


Drink at least the recommended eight glasses of water per day. These should be full 8-ounce servings. When you are more active, increase this by two. Hydrating your skin from the inside helps keep the outside healthy. 

You can mix water-enhancing liquids and those that contain electrolytes to aid the hydration process since drinking plain water can get boring. 

Cooler Showers and Baths


Although steaming hot showers and baths feel great on sore bodies, it is bad for your skin. You are causing your skin to release more of its natural moisture and necessary oils, which often leaves it feeling dry once you are out of the water. Cold showers are not the answer; just turn the temperature down a bit by mixing in some cold water to help protect your skin. 

Eat Avocados and Pumpkin


Avocados have healthy fats that help hydrate your skin from the inside. Don’t overdo it on the avocado though; eating too much can raise your cholesterol. Use avocado as a hydrating mask by mixing it with avocado oil. It should only be left on your face for five minutes. 

Pumpkin works from the inside out and vice versa. Add a serving of pumpkin to your diet each week.  If you purchase pumpkin skincare products that include zinc, you can make a homemade face mask. You will also need tomato juice, sweet almond oil, and an egg. You’ll hydrate your skin while exfoliating and fighting acne. 

A Few More Tips to Hydrate Skin


In the fall and winter months, oil-based products and creams should be used to provide extra hydration. Avoid using soap-based products. If you use facemasks, make your own organic options at home to save money and provide better nutrition to your skin.
