Planning a family vacation in Australia can be a real sweet torture. The country is so dazzlingly diverse that you will want to see it all, yet have to choose just a few destinations. Plus, involving your kids into the vacation plans complicates the things even more. Would they be more interested in snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, or exploring the rugged Australian outback? How much time is too much for them? Here are a few tips to help you organize a memorable trip Down Under for your whole family.

How long are you planning to travel?

The length of the travel depends on your children’s age and what you plan to see. If you are aiming at a short trip that includes a lot of sites, better hope your kids are patient. Younger kids find it hard to keep still after hours spent in the car seat. They just want to play and driving around for hours on end will not suit them. Slow travelling will enable you to break the travel into shorter chunks of time. A 5-hour trip is kids’ upper limit. Besides, when you are not on a tight schedule, you can always change your plans on the go, if you see that your children are getting nervous and impatient.

What do you want to see and do?

Popular tourist sites in Australia range from man-made attractions to natural wonders. You can fly over the Great Barrier Reef and admire the beauty of the only living thing on the Earth that is visible from outer space, or explore it up close on a snorkeling adventure. Watch a sunrise over Uluru or get skiing lessons in the Kosciuszko National Park. Feed the dolphins in the heart of Western Australia’s Shark Bay, cuddle koalas at Currumbin, or dive with great white sharks in South Australia. Maybe you would rather take a City Break, watch a world-class theatre play, or go shopping in Sydney? Gold Coast theme parks are one of the most popular destinations for parents with children.

Family activities in Australia include anything from swimming, fishing, boogie boarding, surfing, snorkeling, boating, camping, cycling, and off-roading. There is literally something for everyone. Talk to your kids and see if they have any ideas about what they would like to see.

What type of accommodation to look for?

Well, this one you already know – the accommodation should be children-friendly. Consider your children’s comfort first of all. Would they be happy to share one bed? Are there other families and kids around with whom they could play? What are the indoor fun options in case the weather forces you to stay inside? Children are usually crazy about camping, but it can be challenging if they are not used to the minimalist living conditions. For your children’s and your own sake, make sure the beds are comfortable, because lack of sleep will affect how the entire family copes with the trip, and always choose accommodation with at least some basic kitchen appliances. They can come in handy if your kids are really small.

Australia has so much to offer and guarantees a life-changing experience. Just remember that not everything will go according to plan, but that is what adventures are all about.

So, when do you set off?
