Holiday traditions make this time of year more exciting for many families. Everything from food to gifts can have their own special twist in each family. If you interested in starting new family traditions this year, consider these ideas:

Go out and look at the holiday lights

This can be done by taking the family on a neighborhood walk, or driving around town if you'd like to see more. This is a great tradition that can involve kids of all ages. You can sing Christmas carols while walking around or sip on homemade hot cocoa with candy canes when you get home.

Baking cookies

Recipes can be passed down for generations and fun to make during the holidays. Small children can help stir or roll out dough, while older kids can learn how to make family recipes. You can even tie in a bit of service with this tradition and bring cookies to neighbors or community centers.

Polar Express night

Watching this movie can help bring the family together for a relaxing evening. After everyone is in their pajamas, sit down with some popcorn and hot chocolate and start the fun! Another thing you can do to add to the magic is to wrap a sleigh bell from Santa for your children to find on Christmas morning.

Gingerbread House

Making gingerbread houses is a fun way to work together and make holiday decorations to put in the kitchen. You can give everyone in the family a few dollars to pick out their favorite ingredient or two and come together to make their gingerbread house.

Service Project

Giving service to those in need is a great way to teach children how to be more giving and understanding of others. Find something that you can do each year to give back to the community. Consider things like secret Santa, soup kitchens, food drives and more. You can also do something simple at home to help your kids serve each other.

Christmas Eve box

Consider starting a Christmas Eve box that your kids can open the night before Christmas. It can include things like personalized ornaments, holiday pajamas, or a new movie or game. You can then all put the new ornaments on the tree and play a new game together.

Holiday traditions vary for each family, but it’s important to get your kids involved and do things together as a family. These ideas can help you get started on new traditions that kids of all ages can appreciate.

  1. We bake cookies every year around Christmas. We get out our holiday themed cookie cutters and make a few different kinds too. We also like to look at Christmas lights.

    1. We make Christmas cookies too! The girls and I haven't drove around looking at Christmas lights, but I think we will do it this year.
