How to Save Money on Holiday Travel and Not Go Broke

When you are traveling during the holidays it is common to feel pain financially. There are a few tips to help save money if you are looking at traveling this holiday season.

Book Early

As soon as you know you are going to be traveling, start looking for the sales. The earlier you book the trip, the cheaper the prices will be. You want to make sure you know exactly where you will be traveling and start the process of booking the hotel, transportation, and so forth. Many companies will raise the rates as tickets begin selling out due to an increase in supply in demand. Expect the prices to start to skyrocket within six weeks of the travel date.

Use Public Transportation

Whenever possible, use public transportation to and from the airport and the hotel. This will help save you parking costs, as well as worrying about your car when you are not present. The price of parking will sometimes increase severely right around the holidays. Most cities offer a shuttle service, but you can also find hotels that include a complimentary shuttle with your reservation.

Pack Smart

If you wrap your gifts prior to traveling, you will be wasting your money. Almost all gifts are unwrapped during the security checkpoint, so it is best to bring wrapping paper with you or purchase it upon arrival. Speaking of purchasing upon arrival, flight companies are extremely particular on the weight of suitcases, especially during the holidays. You can avoid overweight fees by packing lightly and then purchasing items upon arrival. Look at only packing travel sized bottles of beauty items, or purchase them when you arrive so they will not add weight to your bags. Finally, make sure you know how many bags (if any) you can take with you for free.

Travel ON the Holiday

The best way to save money on flights, outside of booking in advance, is to fly on the actual holiday date. Most people want to arrive before the holiday, so prices are higher to accommodate this. When you are booking your flight, look at flying the morning of the holiday so you can still enjoy family time without having to break the bank. However, it is vital that you plan to arrive early because there will be long lines and traffic. If you miss your flight, you will incur more charges so plan ahead.

Be Willing to Negotiate

If you are traveling on a holiday, it is likely that your flight will be overbooked. If you get bumped, then you will need to be willing to negotiate to save money. This is easiest if you are already a frequent flier or have a rewards number with an airline. Talk to them about how to get a better deal, such as upgrading to first class for free on the next flight out. If you are willing to negotiate and go in with that in mind, you are more likely to get what you want.

Traveling on holidays can be quite the headache, but they do not have to break the bank. Instead of flying, you can consider renting vehicles or take a train. No matter what, the best way to save money is to plan ahead and remain flexible.
