Out with the old and in with the new. Or better yet, in with the new and in with the repurposed old! Makeovers aren’t just for movies and television, and they aren’t just for people. Sometimes your home needs a bit of a makeover, too. The best part is, you don’t have to spend a ton of money for trendy decor; you can do it yourself! Pick out your own materials and create something that actually shows off your personal taste.

If you haven’t already, it is time to hop on the DIY trend. Even if you aren’t craft-inclined, some projects are not only adorable, but incredibly easy to make. All you need to do is visit a craft store for supplies and let the decorating begin!

1.  Hanging Yarn Art: The trick behind this piece is a balloon. Unlike your typical birthday party balloon, this project is long lasting and super easy. All you do is coat a balloon with some adhesive, cover with yarn in the colors of your choice, and apply another coat of adhesive. Once everything is dry, you pop the balloon and voila—you now have new decor ready to hang from your ceiling. Just attach some string and you’re good to go.

2.  Decorative Bowls: Who knew a balloon could be so handy? You can create decorative bowls using a technique similar to the yarn art above. Instead of covering the balloon with yarn, cover the bottom portion with doilies, confetti, buttons, or another material you think would work well. That’s half the fun of DIY projects, being creative and experimenting with ideas. Same as before, once everything is dried, pop the balloon, then trim the edges until you have an even bowl. You can even make it uneven for a modern twist. The choice is yours.

3.  Crepe Paper Flowers: With a few easy folding techniques and a selection of colorful
crepe paper, you can make flowers that live forever! Mix and match colors per flower, or create multiple flowers in different hues. Attach some string to hang them from the ceiling, or create smaller versions and add them to a mason jar for quirky table decor.

4.  Tulle Fabric Flower Accents: While crepe paper is great for making flowers, it doesn’t own the market. Tulle also comes in a variety of colors and is easily shaped into flowers. You can use adhesive to attach your tulle flowers to the corners of a mirror for an updated look, or tie your flowers to twine or wire for decor that you can hang on your walls, similar to string lights.

5.  Updated Throw Pillows: If you have a sewing machine handy and know the basics, this is a quick and easy update. Just find a fabric that you like and fashion some new pillowcases for your old throw pillows.

6.  Wrapping Paper Projects: If you find a wrapping paper pattern you like, embrace it! There are many ways to incorporate wrapping paper in your home as decor. Hang a few picture frames filled with wrapping paper in a row for a new take on artwork. Use the paper as a backsplash for bookshelves, buffets, or cabinets. You can even get real crafty and use it as wallpaper.

7.  Rustic Glass Jar Candles: Create a homey vibe with glass jar candles. All you need is a mason jar or other similar vessel and some paper ribbon or raffia. Tie the ribbon around the jar in a bow and drop in a tealight candle. Use them as a single candle holder, or pair a few different sized jars together for a rustic display. Another great option is to use the same jar as a vase. Who doesn’t love a multi-use DIY project?

8.  Bedazzled Picture Frames: It seems like everyone always has pictures frames they aren’t using. Let your unused frames see the light of day by adding a bit of sparkle to them—literally. Use a hot glue gun to add sequins, jewels, or rhinestones for an updated look.

The options really are almost limitless when it comes to DIY home decor. If you want ideas and supplies, just visit an online store like Paper Mart. Inspiration is sure to hit once you start browsing all of the materials! Find the perfect items to customize your own decor and really turn your house into a home. What are you waiting for? Start decorating!

    1. I wish my couch was plain in my living room so I could give my decor a better look. I have a solid colored couch in my loft and may get some cool throw pillows for it.
