There are long days and warm nights just ahead, with the promise of summer vacation, trips to the beach and playing in the sun is enough to get the whole family smiling.  You need to be prepared for your summer fun with a great beach or pool bag.  It should have all the things you need to stay safe in the summer sun, along with whatever might make your life a little easier when the kids get cranky at the end of the day.

Beach Necessities
There are dangers at the beach that aren’t present at your local pool, so your bag will need to have some beach-specific gear.  If you’re packing a bag for the beach, you’ll need:

  • Water shoes – These are great for protecting your feet from whatever might be on the bottom of the ocean floor or buried in the sand around you.  They also protect your tender feet from the sun-drenched (and very hot) sand.

  • Sun hats – Wide-brimmed hats are a wonderful way to protect the back of your neck, the top of your head, your face and your ears.  All of these spots are very prone to sunburn, so having an extra layer of protection just makes sense.

  • First aid kit –Your first aid kit should contain antibiotic ointment, bandages in various sizes, itch relief cream for insect bites and an instant ice pack, along with all the other regular items you might carry in a first aid kit.

Pool Necessities
Lounging around at the local pool is a great way to cool off in the summer, too.  However, it’s a good idea to have a pool bag with some handy items to make your day a little easier.  Your pool bag will need extra towels, a change of clothing for each family member and odds and ends for keeping kids busy when they aren’t in the water.

Bag Basics
No matter whether you’ll be at the pool or the beach, you should have certain items in your bag for any fun in the sun.  These include a good sunscreen (at least SPF 30 and preferably waterproof), water, snacks and sunglasses.  Your big day playing in the water can come to a screeching halt if you’re not prepared with the basics.  Keep your bag packed and up to date, and make a thorough inspection of your bag any time you’re getting ready to head out.

What are your must-haves in your beach bag?

  1. You made a great point about water shoes. I grew up in Atlantic Beach, Florida one day we went to the beach and left our shoes in the car. By the end of the day the sun made the sand so hot that it was very uncomfortable walking back to the car. If you don't protect your feet it is possible to get blisters.
