How to Find Balance Between Blogging and Personal Life

Blogging seems to be an easy way of earning money. Just write something, post it on your blog, and make it popular among your friends list. But it is not that simple. A blogger only knows how much time, dedication and motivation needs to be invested into it. Most serious bloggers are passionate about writing, and they keep on looking for new ideas and thoughts to give them words. They need to deal with networking and marketing of their blog posts too. With all this, they fail to strike a balance between blogging and their personal life. Here are a few ways with which you can find balance between blogging and personal life:

  • Write less: Don’t do everything at once, and don’t get everything completed today itself. Set small, easily achievable goals, such as finishing 2 blog posts in a day, instead of 7 or 8. Ultimately, you will do more by writing less. With fewer blog posts to focus in a day, you will give undivided attention to each post, thereby improving the quality and avoiding blogging burnout.

  • Set a time to end: Bloggers usually feel the need to work over weekends and during nights, and every time in between. Decide on a time when you have to shut down your computer, like at 6 pm everyday. You will feel inspired to finish off everything before 6 pm everyday, and you will finally find time to enjoy your personal life.

  • Maintain boundaries: Many bloggers make themselves available to their readers and clients 24/7, which can actually disturb their personal life. You need to set your blogging hours, and stick to them in all circumstances. Do not switch on your PC and start checking reviews or replying to comments at odd hours. Set your own office hours, and stick to them.

  • Enjoy your off days: When you are not blogging, you should avoid checking your blog again and again looking for comments and reviews. Plan a breakout with friends or family, and leave your laptop at home.

  • Take short breaks: If you have decided to spend 10 hours everyday to your blogging, then it does not need to be 10 hours straight. Taking short, frequent breaks help in maintaining focus and energy during the day. Take a short break to reply to a personal mail, call your spouse, or spend a few minutes with kids. Spending a few minutes for yourself is perfectly normal and acceptable.

  • Personalize the work desk: As you would be spending several hours on your work desk while blogging, you need to keep your environment inspiring. Keep a plant on your work desk, allow your dog to enter, fill the space with family photographs, and decorate it with artwork which makes you happy.

  • Take vacations: Bloggers have no assigned vacation days, but does that mean that you do not deserve a break? Try to take vacations from your blogging too, and go on your favorite trip with your friends or family members.

All these tips can help you find a balance between blogging and personal life. No matter what you do, you cannot dedicate your entire self to your work. You need some personal moments too, and these tips can help you to a great extent.

  1. Great tips! Working on the balance. Taking a day or two off really helps. I have done the 12 hour blog bit but got burned out.

    1. I know that feeling sis! I remember the days of staying up really late almost every night and I told myself I got to stop doing this, so I started hiring help.

  6. Great tips. I think that when you take a break from blogging it's good for your mind and soul it's great to take one at least once every other month. I have to learn how to shut it down at a certain time. I find myself trying to blog on the weekends trying to get posts out.

    1. Yep, I told myself I wouldn't blog anymore over the weekends but I'm still finding myself writing up posts during those days. I am really in need of a break.

  7. I only post 1x a week which really helps, however, I am working on blog stuff all day every day....... Even right now (11:15pm on a Thursday ha ah)... Because well, blogging is my full time job. However, when personal things come up - I always make sure I attend to them as well. I don't want to get completely caught up in my blog because at the end of the day, a balance is KEY and I know that for sure. Saturday is generally a day where I tell myself to STEP BACK! ha.

    1. I have been blogging every day lately and including some weekends and it has been burning me out. I'm always worried about my readers going away but I've seen big blogs blogging a few times a week and still successful. It is all about the quality instead of quantity. Yeah family always come first and I make sure not to put my blog over my family.

  8. Hello Louida,

These are some excellent tips! I do the shutdown computer one too! If I don't I just keep going and going. I usually blog once a week but I haven't did it this last couple of months. I got to get back on track. I just have been doing other things. Sometimes we think that if we are not working we are no getting things done but when you are overworked you aren't really getting anything done either. Feeling tired and stressed does not get results. Thanks for sharing this with us!

    1. Well said Maketta! When blogging starts feeling like a job and I'm overworking myself I'll definitely shut my computer down and take a break. What worked well is not doing everything myself and hiring outside help.
