Getaway Vacation Ideas

When searching for ideas on where to go for your getaway vacation, it is important to take into account what kind of vacation experience you are looking for.  If you want to swim with dolphins, you probably should not choose a dude ranch, just like if you want to ride horses, you probably should not choose Sea World as your destination.  There are many different vacation experiences available, from all-inclusive resorts to rugged camping and just about everything in between.  Read on for some great getaway vacation ideas.

Family Resorts

Resorts that cater to families typically offer a wide range of activities and entertainment.  They are specifically designed to allow parents to relax with their kids, and each other, while enjoying the great outdoors.  From swimming with dolphins to sleeping in the treetops, family-friendly resorts have amazing offerings that everyone will enjoy.

Sweet, Sweet Tours

Learning is always more fun when it is hands-on, and especially when it involves learning how your favorite sweets are made.  Factory tours are available year-round for popular candy makers like Hershey’s and Jelly Belly, but you can also arrange to visit the famous Ben and Jerry’s factory, potato chip factories and various candy factories in several states.  Centering your vacation on factory tours may seem a little odd at first, but your family will have a ball, especially when they get their free samples!

The Ultimate Boardwalk Experience

Boardwalks have been part of the American landscape for generations.  They offer a great place for kids (and adults) to be kids, with a variety of rides, food that will make your mouth water and excellent arcades.  Boardwalks such as the one at Coney Island, New York, and New Jersey’s Wildwood have been perennial favorites of vacationing families for many years, with very good reason.

Educational Opportunities

Taking your family on a vacation where they can learn something is not against the rules, and just because it is educational does not mean it cannot be fun.  Try a popular museum (children’s museums have been established in many large cities), a national park or historically important areas such as the site of battles fought in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War or others.  There are historical tours available, especially to explore the Antebellum South, Washington, DC and other areas important to the history of the US.  Some of the best vacations are those where you learn something that sticks with you forever.

Water Parks

This probably is understood, but this is the one your kids will be screaming for.  Water parks are available all across the United States and in several countries around the world.  Some of them are even Disney—themed, meaning you might be able to slip a bit of a Disney vacation in there, too.  Whether you want to visit the water park in your area or you want to travel to one of the top-rated water parks in the nation, nothing is more fun than spending a few days hanging out and riding the waves.

What is your dream getaway vacation for your family?

  1. I haven't been to a water park in quite some time, though it's one in the city. I'd love to go to a waterpark or an all inclusive resort.

    1. It has been years since I've been to a waterpark. Last time I been to one I was a teenager.

I would love to do a all inclusive resort, that is right up my ally!

  2. I would love to have a nice beach vacation with my family. I don't think we will be going anywhere this year. We will probably just take some tme to explore our state. I've been wanting to go digging for diamonds for forever, so hopefully we will get a chance to do it this year.

    1. You know what, you can go to the beach and dig for diamonds and gold there. I see people with their metal detectors in search for gold on the beach.
