Swimming and Survival Training at British Swim School

Hey Yall!  This is it, the countdown to the end of the school year has begun.

Today is Lauren's 5th Grade Awards Ceremony celebrating leaving the nest of Elementary and entering Middle School.

Wednesday is the last day of school, and the girls and I are looking forward to spending the summer together going on trips and cooling off in a pool somewhere.

With the weather already hitting the 90 digits, we have already been hitting the pools in our community.  What I have noticed is that my girls still need a bit of help when it comes to perfecting their swimming skills.  Since they're going to be doing a lot of swimming this summer, I want to make sure that they stay safe in the pool and become stronger swimmers.

It has been a couple of years since the girls taken swimming lessons.  The school they use to go here in Atlanta was just okay to me.  I felt like my girls were only learning the basics, yet their skills weren't strengthening.

Also, what I didn't like about their previous swim school was the overcrowding of their classes.  They weren't getting enough one-on-one time with their instructor, so it would take longer for them to progress to the next level.  After those two years, I took them out of swim school.

It took awhile for me to find a swim school that would work well for my girls, for another couple of years.

Recently, I found one that I love and the girls love as well called British Swim School.

You're probably wondering, why is the school called British Swim School?

I thought the same thing myself.  I thought the school was called that because they teach particular swim techniques from Great Britain.

Rita Goldberg, the founder of British Swim School, started the school 30 years ago in Great Britain.  The swim school is more than just learning to swim; students will also learn survival skills in a small class setting.  Instructors are highly trained, teaching gentle, yet fun swim techniques that help students learn to swim and teach them to save lives in the water.

Babies from 3 months to adults can join the British Swim School.  They have swim lessons for every age and ability.

This past Saturday was the girls first time at British Swim School where classes were held at LA Fitness in Johns Creek, Georgia.  The setting was inviting, relaxing, the girls couldn't wait to get started.

Saturday's class was about the instructors seeing what the girls' current swim levels are.  Also, it is survival week, so the girls had to wear t-shirts to learn how to swim in emergency situations.

The instructors were excellent making sure the girls were comfortable and were having an enjoyable experience.  The director and instructors answered all my questions making me feel confident that this school will be the right fit for my daughters.

At the end of class, the girls were presented with a certificate of what class they'll be in.  Both girls will be in class Minnow, and the goals for this class is:

1. Safe entry/ safe exit with mobility using the wall

2. Jump in, roll over, and float for 20 seconds independently

3. Independent glides back to the wall

4. Beginner backstroke 10 yards

5. Safe entry and stream line from wall, rollover, and float independently for 20 seconds

Also, they came home with homework to help them prepare for their next class visit.

Update:

I'm noticing as the girls were doing their weekly class a vast improvement in their swimming skills.  Before, they couldn't do a back float without assistance.  Now, Lauren can float on her back with little to no help and Michelle with just a bit of aid from the instructor.

Also, before starting British Swim School, the girls only swam under water with goggles on, now they can do it without them.

The girls are more confident swimmers and have been putting their new skills to the test when we swim in our community pools.

  2. I need to sign my kids up for swim lessons. I even need swim lessons for myself. I took swim lessons as a kid but I was never a strong swimmer. This sounds like a great company to use for swim lessons.

  3. Such a great way to kick off the summer and much better than how we learned to swim. We were thrown into the water and told to "swim!" #ProductReviewParty

  4. I feel bad because neither me nor my kids know how to swim. I really need to look into something where we can all learn.
