Is Having a New Year Resolution a Waste of Time?

Is Having a New Year Resolution a Waste of Time? via www.productreviewmom.com

2017 has begun and already people are making their New Year resolutions. Some people scoff at the idea and claim it’s a complete waste of time. The truth is that New Year resolutions are worth it, but you need to frame them in the right way because the way most go about them is entirely wrong.

This guide is going to show you how to do it.

Why Do Most People Fail?

Most people tend to give on their New Year resolutions within the first month. This is because they often choose generalized goals that have no basis. For example, they choose to get in shape by the end of the year. But what does that mean?

There are a lot of definitions of getting in shape. You can’t measure progress because you don’t know where the end is. It doesn’t take long for people to lose motivation and quickly give in.

Be Specific About Your Goals

Goals are always useful because they give you something to aim for. The problem with New Year resolutions is they’re too long-term and not specific enough. You need to give clear goals. For example, pledging to lose thirty pounds by the end of the year is a good goal to have.

Creating milestones along the way is even better. For example, you could add a milestone that you want to have lost ten pounds by April. You can follow your progress and get motivated when you pass certain milestones. All of this makes it more likely that you’ll stay on the wagon.

The more specific you can be the better.

Review Your New Year Resolutions

A New Year resolution isn’t just something that happens in January. People who succeed with their New Year resolutions do so because they aren’t necessarily the same at the end of the year as they were at the start of the year. New Year resolutions need to be examined and changed as the year goes on. Things change as the month’s pass.

You might decide to expand your goals, or you may realize your initial goal is no longer relevant. Regular reviews will keep you motivated and involved.

We recommend writing down your New Year resolutions and creating a clear road map for how you’re going to achieve them. This will give you more motivation and keep you on the right track.

What’s the Key to Choosing a Great New Year Resolution?

Choosing a great New Year resolution is all about how specific and detailed you can make it. And then you need to review that resolution later in the year. You need to turn your resolution into a project, rather than just a thought you dream about.

For people who succeed with their New Year resolutions, their resolution is their main motivation for the year. It becomes their project and their primary focus.

Unless you can look at yours in the same way, you’re completely wasting your time. Do you have any New Year Resolutions for 2017?

  1. Great advice and post hon! I don't always do the New Years Resolution, but after the year 2016 I was determined and knew I was setting some! lol I'm a total list and goals person (yes I'm that person! lol) I think it as little challenges for myself I guess.
